Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund CEO Rosalia Martins-Hausiku says 70% of car crashes occur in Windhoek.
Speaking at the 5th annual Women in Road safety conference held today in Windhoek, Martins-Hausiku said 59% of injury victims are male.
“I will tell you why if we win in Windhoek we can win anywhere. Because if we take care of Khomas region, 70% of our problems have been resolved because 70% of the crashes are occurring within the Khomas region,” said Martins-Hausiku.
She added: Now if the male population is at 50% and our male fatality is at 74%, 59% of injuries year-to-date according to the statistics by the motor vehicle accident fund are males. So they are dying at 74%, that’s year-to-date statistics,” she said.
Khomas Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua said despite good roads in Namibia, frequent accidents occur due to drivers’ lack of care and patience.
She recommended a change in attitudes among drivers to help reduce the frequent accidents occurring on the roads in the country.
“I am now almost in Windhoek running for 10 years, hardly there is no day you don’t see Namibians making accidents, and the good roads that we have one keep on questioning. But some of us who are being driven when you look at the way how we drive around this City of Windhoek , it’s concerning. Namibian drivers are not patient and this is one thing that makes me really go crazy,” said McLeod-Katjirua.
