Police Inspector General Lieutenant Joseph Shikongo has expressed frustration with how police officers handle civil matters.

Shikongo made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Windhoek this week.

Shikongo said some officers sometimes overstep their role in civil matters.

“You also find cases… that are opened. Some are not just relevant… There was an issue, I recall when I was a regional commander, there was a case opened…somebody had stolen some chicken. By the time, when the case was opened, it was stock theft. Stock theft case was registered,” stated Shikongo.

He gave another example where a vehicle was bumped from behind but was registered as malicious damage to property, despite being an accident. He also mentioned a case where someone’s T-shirt was burnt and registered as arson.

The annual conference of the crime investigation division for regional crime coordinators concluded on Friday
