More than 78 000 people in the Kunene region are facing extreme food insecurity, with only 35 002 households receiving drought relief food.

Kunene governor Marius Sheya shared these figures during the state of the region last week. He attributed the situation to climate change.

“Climate change exacerbates drought through persistent heat waves and irregular rainfall, which adversely affects human health, lives, and livelihoods. Adoption of mitigation measures is crucial to safeguard livelihoods, especially for communities dependent on land and rainwater,”  said Sheya.

The governor said the situation will remain unchanged from October 2024 to March 2025.
