Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters have called on the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)to hold individuals accountable who have hidden agendas against their party.

The party’s deputy president Kalimbo Iipumbu spoke at a media briefing following the High Court’s judgment, saying the deregistration was politically motivated, given the timing of the exercise despite being warned by the attorney’s general office.

Kalimbo also highlighted that their legal costs exceeded N$450 000 while emphasising that they had lost far more than money because of the deregistration.

Regarding their election campaigns, he said they were still active on the ground and would be on the ballot papers come the November elections.

“You can see there is fear among certain people, and then these people are friends with individuals sitting with the ECN Commissioner.

We have wrong people sitting at the Commission and we are calling for the Speaker of Parliament because he has the authority to call them to order,” said Kalimbo adding that it is clear the elections will not be free and fair.

Contacted for comment regarding the NEFF’s return to parliament, National Assembly Executive Director, Lydia Kandetu said it was not the national assembly prerogative to decide who comes to parliament. Instead, they will wait for formal communication from the ECN.

In addition, ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka stated the commission is studying the reasons contained in the High Court judgment.

“The commission notes the judgment and orders contained therein. The commission is busy studying the reasons contained in the 51 page judgment and will in due course pronounce its position on the ruling,” he said.  High Court Judge, Thomas Masuku on Thursday set aside ECN’s decision to deregister NEFF with costs.
