The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation’s Acting Executive Director Ambassador Sabine Bohlke-Moller, says they are closely monitoring the recent violent protests against immigrants in the United Kingdom.

Anti-immigrant rioters have engaged in looting, arson and clashes with police in cities including London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Sunderland, Manchester, Hull and Bristol.

Bohlke-Moller advises all Namibian citizens currently in the UK and those planning to travel to the UK to exercise extreme caution and avoid areas where protests and riots are taking place.

The ministry has further warned people in affected areas to:

Stay indoors and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.  Keep away from large gatherings and demonstrations.  Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Stay informed of the latest development by monitoring local media.

Follow the instructions of the local authorities and police.  Meanwhile British High Commissioner to Namibia Charles Moore says the United Kingdom is still safe.

“Over the past 10 days we are aware of a lot of civil unrest and violence that has been happening in several towns and cities in the UK coupled by protests and counter-protests against migration.

“The UK is a very safe and welcoming country and we welcome visitors from all over the world and we hope that these visitors will not be put off by these scenes of civil unrest that they may have witnessed,” he said.
