The agriculture ministry has banned poultry imports and cancelled in-transit permits previously issued to Rio Grande do Sul of Brazil.

The ban includes live poultry, birds, and all poultry products.

This follows the detection of an outbreak of the Newcastle disease in the South American country on 9 July this year.

The ministry said only cooked poultry meat products for commercial purposes may still be imported into Namibia under the veterinary import permit.

Ministry’s spokesperson Simon Nghipandulwa said: Consignment from the state of Rio Grande do Sul containing poultry products packed in the final packaging on or after the date starting the suspension will be rejected and sent back to the country of origin or destroyed at the importer’s cost.”
