President, Nangolo Mbumba, stated that the country’s independence came from the sacrifices made by people, including many from the Zambezi region.  Mbumba mentioned names including the late Swapo vice president Brendan Simbaye, and PLAN commissar  Greenwell Simasiku Matongo, who were all from the region.  The president made these remarks during the country’s 34th Independence celebrations in Katima Mulilo.

While delivering his keynote address, Mbumba said the region played a critical role during the liberation struggle because it served as an escape route to neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Zambia.

“It gives us an opportunity to recall the important role played by ordinary people in the Zambezi region who have contributed to the independence and freedom of Namibia,” stated Mbumba.

NewsOnOne spoke to several residents from Katima Mulilo, who expressed pride in witnessing the celebrations in the region for the first time.

“We know politically the Zambezi region is one of the regions that played a very significant role in the independence of Namibia. Colleagues, let’s enjoy this day as we respect the blood of those who died for this independence,” said Nsala Muhongo.

Another resident from Katima Mulilo, Oliver Sifwa, said that the independence celebration was powerful and that the number of attendees was impressive.

“I therefore would like to thank our government for holding this event in the Zambezi region so that our youth, have a little experience, and learn something about the independence celebration,” said Sifwa.
