The Leonardville Village Council has called on the government to allow the continuation of uranium explorations by the Russian owned, Uranium One company, as the company’s activities created employment and brought economic growth to the village before explorations were halted in 2021.
Village Council Chairperson, Petra Salome Witbooi, said that this request comes after farmers and organisations that opposed the drilling, were unable to present proof that uranium drilling in the area was contaminating the Stampriet aquifer, or causing any harm to the town’s groundwater source.
