Social activist and Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters Party (NEFF) Economic Commissar, Michael Amushelelo, has questioned the tradition of celebrating independence for over three decades. According to Amushelelo, such a celebration was symbolic in 1990 and suggests that such funds could be better utilised in addressing unemployment and hunger.

However,local economist and University of Namibia lecturer, Dr.Omu Kakujaha-Matundu, disagrees with Amushelelo. He said that taking such national events to the regions does not only reignites unity among the public but also benefits small businesses in the community due to the large influx of people during that period.
