The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) says 1.45 million people have registered for the November Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The ECN revealed this figure in Windhoek today during the handover of the final voter register and code of conduct to 21 political parties today as part of the preliminary statistics.

The ECN chairperson, Elsie Nghikembua, says this represents 90 percent of eligible registered voters.

Nghikembua said the provisional register provides a detailed breakdown of registered voters in each local authority, forming the national voter register.

“The Commission wishes to inform you that the final statistics released today are equally disaggregated into national, generational cohorts, gender breakdown, youth turn up and people with disabilities, as well as breakdown of the total number of further multiple entries recorded in each region where applicable.  It is equally important to inform you as our stakeholders that part of the final statistics released today include also a breakdown of registered voters in each local authority which forms part of the total national voters register,” said Nghikembua.

Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer Peter Shaama noted that the Khomas region recorded the highest number of multiple voter entries. Shaama said that females make up 54 percent and males 46 percent of registered voters.

“The chairperson indicated that our voters register is also structured into generational cohorts. It’s just only to indicate the generations per year.  We have a generation that was born before 1925. That takes 1,051 registered voters. The generation that was born between 1925 and 1944, we call it a silent generation, stands at 37,964 registered voters, “ said Shaama.

Political parties receiving the final voter register and code of conduct were urged to adhere strictly to the code.
