Namibians urged to embrace diverse sectors to combat economic challenges

By: Hertha Ekandjo The Daures Green Hydrogen Village (DGHV) Chief Executive Officer Jerome Namaseb, has called on Namibia to diversify its economic sectors to effectively address pressing issues such as food insecurity and unemployment. He emphasized that embracing emerging industries like green hydrogen can significantly broaden employment opportunities and reduce the nation’s reliance on imported goods. “Namibia should be open to welcoming different sectors and projects over being selective,” Namaseb stated, highlighting the potential of projects like DGHV to increase local food production and decrease dependency on imports. Namaseb was speaking during a Daures media site visit on Tuesday in the Erongo region. The DGHV has initiated a climate-controlled greenhouse facility aimed at producing approximately 500 tonnes of tomatoes and 600 tonnes of carrots annually. These vegetables are currently available in local markets through retailers such as Woermann Brock, Metro, and Spar, contributing to reduced food imports and enhanced food security within the country. In addition to agricultural produce, the DGHV is pioneering the production of green ammonia, a key component in fertilizers like ammonium sulfate and nitrate. This initiative aims to produce up to 30% of Namibia’s fertilizer needs, thereby reducing import dependency and supporting local agriculture. The DGHV project has already created employment opportunities during its construction phase and plans to expand its workforce as operations scale up. The project emphasizes local involvement by awarding contracts to small and medium enterprises from the Daures constituency. Beyond agriculture, the DGHV is at the forefront of establishing a green hydrogen economy in Namibia. The project aims to produce green hydrogen and ammonia using renewable energy sources, positioning the country as a potential exporter of these clean energy carriers Watch on oneafrica.tv, DStv or GOtv at 19h00 on Mondays to Fridays. #newsonone #agrionone #newsupdate #oneafrica

Nandi-Ndaitwah urges pensioners to be patient amid budget constraints

By: Ludorf Iyambo President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on elderly Namibians to reduce their daily meals to just one, while the government figures out how to address the needs of the youth. Her figure of speech implies that senior citizens should be patient with the government regarding their pension increases. Nandi-Ndaitwah made the remarks during a recent visit to a centre for flood victims in Etunda, where she addressed concerns about the unchanged pension grant for senior citizens. “I am on my knees, pleading with the pensioners to use the grants wisely, especially while we work towards addressing the youth’s plight. I will see where I will start. I may not be able to solve all their problems at once, but I have to start somewhere. I believe our elders will understand my request,” said Nandi-Ndaitwah. She also addressed the ongoing public debate around a proposal by the late President Hage Geingob to increase the old-age pension to N$3000. According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, the former president did not intend for the increase to be immediate. "I know the late president Hage Geingob said the pension should be increased to N$3000. However, he didn't say it should happen at once. People interpret things the way they understand it or instigate the public against the government, which represents everyone. I heard what the late president said. He said the pension should be gradually increased to N$3000. For now, let us work together,” remarked the President. Political analyst Ben Mulongeni has strongly criticised the President for what he termed as an unrealistic election promise to increase the grant from just over N$1 000 to N$3 000. According to Mulongeni, such a commitment is not only financially implausible but also risks undermining public trust in political leadership. “I was very sure that the President cannot make a promise to increase pension money from N$1000 something to N$3000. It's unrealistic, almost impossible. Mulongeni emphasised the need for leaders to make credible and financially sound pledges during campaign seasons. “When we campaign, we must make realistic promises that are understandable,” he said, adding that the President’s remarks were later contradicted by the Minister of Finance, who reportedly warned that such a hike in pensions would lead to hospital closures due to funding shortfalls. Mulongeni questioned why such statements were made before consulting the finance ministry, saying it personifies a pattern of populist rhetoric. “This is typical of politicians, just making a good statement to attract votes, which for me is immoral,” he said.

Namibia to become a leading energy hub

By: Eric Mhunduru President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia is on the path to becoming a leading energy hub in ambition and action. Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia is on a deliberate drive to move from oil discoveries to actual production without much delay but with responsibility. She, however, acknowledges that partnerships and strong technical governance are needed to achieve this. The President said this in a speech read by right-honourable Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare at today’s official opening of the Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC) in Windhoek. Nandi- Ndaitwah said Namibia seeks to contribute to the global projection of 7 million oil barrels daily by the end of 2025. "Long before the recent discoveries, the government actively promoted the country's potential in oil, gas, and renewable energy, laying a strong foundation for long-term growth. The establishment of Petro Fund as a state-owned enterprise is one that exemplifies such a vision, namely,y of strategic investment in human capital to ensure that Namibians will be equipped to lead when opportunity arrives. Without a doubt, the government’s wish is to move from discovery to actual production without much delay, but with responsibility. Through a well-paced approach, we will ensure our natural resources create long-term opportunities and national progress. We know that going ahead requires collaboration, technical capability, and strong governance, and Namibia is ready," she said. Nandi-Ndaitwah also emphasised the need for sustainable exploration that does not harm the environment. "Namibia's energy ambitions will remain firmly aligned with our environmental values. We take pride in our global reputation for conservation and intend to uphold it. "As we grow our energy sector, we do so with a deep commitment to safeguarding biodiversity, respecting our natural heritage, and pursuing development that is both responsible and sustainable," she added. The 7th edition of the (NIEC) has attracted stakeholders in the energy sector from across the world and will conclude on Friday.
