Education ministry to brief the nation on free education next week
By: Envaalde Matheus The education ministry will update the nation on Monday regarding the roll-out of free tertiary education, a policy that was announced by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during the State of the Nation Address in April this year. The government-appointed task force, which was mandated to refine the plan, has already submitted its recommendations. In response to questions by NewsOnOne, the education ministry’s Deputy Executive Director, Edda Bohn, said plans for free university tuition and registration fees have already been developed and remain on track. Academic professor, Johannes Coetzee, said free tertiary education could backfire, widening inequality as wealthy families still access top schools, while poor students remain stuck in failing government institutions, and the national budget faces more strain.

By: Envaalde Matheus The Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) faction leader, Hoze Riruako, has slammed the new land taskforce for sidelining traditional leaders, saying the government lacks the capacity to manage policies from start to finish, yet keeps setting up committees that go nowhere. Riruako was speaking at a media conference in Windhoek on Wednesday, aimed at addressing the Land Bill currently before Parliament, which he says lacks proper consultation and excludes grassroots communities.
